SSD data recovery
SATA, M.2 and NVMe SSDs that have stopped being recognised, show the wrong capacity or died after a power problem.
Why SSDs fail differently
An SSD has no moving parts, so it rarely gives warning. When the controller or its firmware fails, the drive can disappear completely, report a tiny capacity such as 0 bytes or 8MB, or lock itself into a safe mode. The data is often still on the memory chips; the problem is getting the drive to hand it over.
What we repair
- Firmware faults: the drive is detected with the wrong name or capacity, or freezes the computer.
- Electronic board faults: shorted components or damage after a power surge, faulty charger or liquid.
- Controller lock-ups: drives stuck in a busy or read-only state.
Before you send it
Don't keep reconnecting a failing SSD and don't run a "secure erase" or reinitialise it in disk utilities. Many SSDs permanently clear data blocks in the background once they're told the space is free.
Encrypted and Mac SSDs
Tell us at the consultation if the drive used BitLocker, FileVault or hardware encryption, or if it's soldered to a Mac logic board. These change the method and we'll confirm whether recovery is possible before you send anything.
| Initial consultation | Free | |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware or electronic board repair | £450–£650 + VAT | Depending on complexity |
You receive a fixed quote within this range before any recovery work starts. Recovered data is supplied on an external drive at the current market price, or on a drive you provide.

Common questions
My SSD shows as 0 bytes or isn't detected. Is the data lost?
Not necessarily. Those symptoms usually mean a firmware or controller fault, and the data is often still intact on the memory chips. Stop using the drive and contact us.
Can you recover data from a TRIM-enabled SSD after deletion?
Deleted files on SSDs are often cleared quickly by TRIM, so recovery chances are much lower than on hard drives. We'll tell you honestly at the free consultation whether it's worth trying.

If a drive is clicking, buzzing or not spinning, switch it off now. Every extra power-on can scratch the platters.
